The soul of artistry by Leah Rei, now available at Sue Bickerdyke Interiors
Although all of my works are abstract representations of our natural surroundings, my main goal is to create scenes that can evoke a deep sense of calm and wonder. I want each piece to bring a light that envelops the viewer and creates a landscape they can travel to and explore. Through the weaving of transparent layers, we can meander through these dreamscapes and find joy, solace, and a breath of fresh air. I deeply want my work to offer something more than a place to rest your eye but rather a place to hold your heart.
Early life:
Born in Colorado, Leah moved to Arizona along with her family at a young age. Creativity and craftsmanship were always encouraged and fostered by her family. At an early age her mother taught her how to sew and do embroidery which sparked a need in Leah to constantly be creating. She has fond memories of coloring and making collages sprawled out on the grass in the front yard at her childhood home.
Education:
Leah attended Arizona State University on an academic scholarship choosing to major in Fine Arts with an emphasis in Painting. While studying in the arts she was exposed to many different areas of concentration. Always hungry for more Leah took as many classes as possible to explore painting, drawing, printmaking, fibers and ceramics. This is where she learned that she was truly excited by working with integrated techniques and mixed media. She graduated with honors in 2009. Leah also pursued a Masters of Business from University of Arizona. She understands that part of the artist spirit is also one of entrepreneurship and uses this degree to navigate the life of a professional artist.
Inspiration:
She finds a great deal of inspiration in nature and is often drawn to creating works that honor this. When in need of a muse, Leah takes to the trails of Phoenix Arizona, where she currently resides. Leah hikes to clear her mind and refocus her efforts. Working mostly in acrylic ink, her art is an exploration of color, light and texture with the desire to represent all that inspires her with a sophisticated and thoughtful touch. The artist uses a variety of acrylic paint and mediums, accenting each piece with gold of silver leaf. Her paintings utilize metallic pigments layered under transparent washes to create ethereal landscape and nature inspired works. The gold leaf is often used to accentuate and illustrate sunlight.
